Nothing kills a great day of riding like a soaking wet pair of socks. Wet feet make cold days colder, hot days stickier, and they'll also leave your boots with the kind of stink you can't scrub off with steel wool.

Waterproof motorcycle boots solve all these issues, so if you're still taking chances on bad weather or creek crossings, consider this your wakeup call.

Below you'll find a few of our favorite pairs, as well as how to pick the right pair for whatever type of riding you do.

What to Look For in Waterproof Motorcycle Boots

Plain and simple, a good pair of waterproof motorcycle boots should do two things: keep you dry, and keep you safe. Here's how to pick a pair that will serve you well for years to come.

Waterproofing

Motorcycle boots keep water at bay using a waterproof breathable lining, the same sort of technology you'll find in high end backpacking or ski gear. You've got two important questions to ask when evaluating that lining: Who makes it, and how tall is it?

Concerning the brand: Back in the day GoreTex was generally considered the gold standard when it came to waterproofing motorcycle gear. You could certainly make the argument that that's still the case, but we'll also note that proprietary membranes have come a long way, and they're essentially the exact same technology because GoreTex's original patent ran out years ago.

crf300l-water-crossing-2

"When crossing over creeks and streams, a taller gaiter inside the boot is more likely to keep your socks dry"

To that end we'll say don't be afraid to save some money and buy a non-GoreTex garment from a trusted brand. Alpinestars, Forma, TCX, Dainese and more all make their own waterproof membranes in house now, and we've had great experiences with many of them.

New Call-to-action

As for the "how tall is it?" question, you generally want the highest possible coverage available to help seal out moisture effectively. This is why tall offroad/adventure style boots typically fare so well in creek crossings while waterproof riding shoes or short boots can struggle to handle a light rain.

Protection

Aside from the added lining, waterproof motorcycle boots are no different than a standard riding boot. That means all the usual rules apply including safety certifications, crush protection, and rigidity.

Ideally any boot you buy will pack enough safety features to achieve a proper CE rating, and the higher that rating is, the better. There's typically a compromise to be made somewhere between outright safety and optimal comfort though (both on and off the bike), so as much as we prioritize protection on our tours, we factor this into our decisions as well.

testing-alpinestars-tech-10-DHCP

"Many of our tour guides choose to ride in heavy duty motocross boots for the added safety factor, but they also spend a significant amount of time in the dirt."

One important caveat to make here: The more time you spend riding off-road, the more important elevated safety features become.

Off-roading is much more likely to end in a crash scenario of some kind, and even though most of those accidents happen at low speeds, more rigid boots with added protection from crushing, twisting, and hyperextension injuries are always a smart investment, even at the cost of some comfort.

Our Top Picks for Waterproof Motorcycle Boots

Keeping these basic criteria in mind, we've got a few boots in particular we'd recommend from our experience over the years. Here are a few of our favorite picks for everything from globe-trotting adventure riders to weekday commuters.

1. Forma Adventure Boots

As the name suggests, Forma's Adventure boots are made with adventure riders in mind. We've enjoyed our share of backcountry epics in these bad boys, and they're one of the first boots we'd recommend to your average adventure rider splitting their time evenly between pavement and dirt.

We've done pretty much everything in these from creek crossings to crashes (sometimes both at the same time), and the Forma's have held up great. Their extra-tall design keeps water out from above and below while also offering above-average protection for off-road use.

gnoc-in-forma-adventure-motorcycle-boots-in-vietnam"RIDE'S Vietnam tour guide Ngoc loves his Forma Adventures"

A few other field notes on these waterproof motorcycle boots: Break in time is nearly non-existent, they're comfortable enough on and off the bike for touring dury or short hikes, and the outsole strikes a great balance of walkability and rigidity that's ideal for long days standing on the pegs.

We also love that the Forma Adventure is one of best deals going for a do-it-all boot with reliable weather protection at just under the $300 mark.

New call-to-action

Our only real complaint with these boots is that if you're spending more time exploring in the dirt than touring on tarmac, the Forma Adventures are a little too flexible in the ankles for our liking.

That's a common tradeoff with most ADV-specific boots like these, but one worth keeping in mind just the same.

Pros:

  • Great do-it-all boot for a great price
  • Crash tested and approved
  • Tall gaiter is great for rainy days and water crossings

Cons:

  • Bit too flexible for more spirited off-roading
  • Leather/DryTex membrane combo runs a bit warm in the summer

2. Klim Adventure GTX Boot

We're proud to share that we've finally wrapped a full lifespan test of Klim's latest Adventure GTX waterproof motorcycle boots, and they've served us well all across the world. We picked these up when Klim first released them back in 2020, and four years later, we're finally ready to retire them.

All things considered, the Adventure GTX remains one of our favorite all-rounder ADV boots of all time. They've kept us safe through multiple crashes, kept us dry without fail, and they're also extremely comfortable on and off the bike. Don't be fooled by the Adventure GTX's tall build or tanky looks: This is a great boot for hiking around when you're off the bike exploring.

New call-to-action

Other highlights of these boots include multiple insole options including a fantastic Ortholite gel footbed, sturdy reinforcements at the shin, toe, ankle, and heel, and plenty of added padding for comfort and protection over the top of the foot and both ankles.

We've also enjoyed using the Adventure GTX's quick and easy BOA dial system, which is much more convenient than traditional buckles.

klim-adventure-gtx-adventure-motorcycle-boots-in-action

"Garrett taking a dirt nap while testing out Klim's Adventure GTX on our Pacific Coast Highway + route."

As for downsides, our main complaint here is that if you ride in extremely dusty environments like our tours through Southern USA or Baja, the BOA dial has a tendency to get sticky, so regular cleaning is recommended. Nothing crazy, just spray em down after an offroad ride or long weekend in the dirt.

We'll also note that the Adventure GTX boots are much more flexible at the ankles compared to more motocross-inspired options like the Sidi Adventure 2 Gore-Tex, making them more comfortable off bike.

Pros:

  • Outstanding material quality, fit & finish
  • All-day comfortable on and off the bike
  • GoreTex liner has never let us down

Cons:

  • BOA system gets sticky in dustier environments
  • Less off-road protection than some

3. TCX Blend 2 Waterproof Boots

You just can't beat the TCX Blend 2 when it comes to value. Casual good looks, universal appeal, serious crash protection, and an asking price under $250. What's not to love?

Throw in TCX's proprietary T-Dry membrane, and you've got one of the most well-rounded pairs of waterproof motorcycle boots money can buy. The Blend 2 WP is the ideal around town casual boot, but it's also right at home pulling long range touring duty whether you're riding a bagger or a Bimmer.

"The Blend 2 WP is ideal for day-to-day casual use, but they also pull touring duty surprisingly well."

Safety-wise TCX equips the Blend 2 with a full-grain leather upper for abrasion protection, then backs it with added crush protection in the sole, toebox, and heel cup. We also appreciate that TXC incorporated impact-absorbing pucks on both ankles, giving the Blend 2 another step up above their similiarly priced and styled competitors.

Truth be told the only real issue we have with the blend is that as a fairly casual boot it still flexes easily at the ankles in all directions. That's the price you pay for comfort and walkability, but something you'll want to keep in mind.

Pros:

  • Timeless casual appeal
  • Solid abrasion and crush protection throughout
  • Great price, especially for a waterproof model

Cons:

  • Still a flexible boot above the ankle
  • You'll still want another pair of boots for dirt and sport duty

4. Alpinestars SMX 6 V2 Drystar Boots

If you're a sportbike fan, Alpinestars' SMX 6 V2 Drystar is the only pair of boots you need in your quiver. Arguably the most versatile sporting boot on the market, the SMX 6 Drystar combines racetrack proven safety tech with AStars' own Drystar waterproof membrane for folks who like to go fast and get wet.

We dig the SMX 6 because it takes the lion's share of its DNA from Alpinestars' laser-focused SMV Plus V2 race boots, but adds extra comfort for those long days on the street. That includes extra large front and rear bellows, air vents at the heel and shin for added breathability, and a full length elastic zipper down the side for easier entry.

kieth-on-the-track-motorcycle-racing-jacket

"Alpinestars' SMX 6 work great great out on the track, but they also make a solid choice as a sport-oriented touring option."

As for waterproofing, while Alpinestars does make a GoreTex version of the SMX 6 V2, we've had nothing but good experiences with their Drystar membrane, and opting for the proprietary version saves a nice chunk of change.

So much so, in fact, that despite their good looks and considerable tech, the SMX 6 V2 Drystar is actually one of the best deals going in the segment pirce-wise.

Join us in Baja CTA

The main complaint we have with these waterproof motorcycle boots is that although they're plenty safe for hard charging street riders and the occasional track day, they only incorporate a single external ankle hinge rather than the dual hinge system found on boots like the SMX Plus V2.

Serious track day junkies will likely want to spend the extra $$$ for a more hard-nosed option, but most folks will prefer the added comfort and versatility of the SMX 6.

Pros:

  • A track boot built for rain
  • Touring boot comfort and walkability
  • Drystar version delivers serious value for the money

Cons:

  • Sport-centric look isn't for everyone
  • Not quite as protective as a hardcore race boot

5. TCX Street 3 WP Shoes

While heavy duty boots will always be the best option for motorcyclists, sometimes we want something a bit more on the casual side. Whether you're looking for a waterproof motorcycle boot to wear around town, to work, or to dinner, the TCX Street 3 WP remains the best deal going.

We've been wearing the Street 3 off and on for a few years now, and we're big fans of it's Vans-inspired casual style. It's easy to walk in and looks perfectly natural with a pair of jeans, yet it still delivers excellent abrasion resistance and even sports a truly crush proof Z-Plate sole.

kurt-riding-pavement-on-the-zero-dsrx-ev-adventure-motorcycle

"Rocking the TCX Street 3 WP during this year's testing of the Zero DSR/X electric adventure bike."

As far as protection goes, we've had the TCX Street 3 WP in an absolute downpour and we're happy to report they've kept our socks dry.

Naturally the waterproof membrane runs a bit warmer than TCX's standard Street or Street Air riding shoes, but once you're up and moving they're plenty comfortable, even in the dead of summer.

Motorcycle Trip Checklist

The main downside we've experienced with these waterproof motorcycle shoes is because they only cover just over the ankle, water can still find its way in through the top if you're aren't wearing over-the-boot style pants to seal it out.

We'll also note that because this is a riding shoe rather than a boot, there's really no crush protection on offer outside of the Z-Plate sole itself.

Pros:

  • Great casual look and feel
  • Much more comfortable than your average boot
  • Proprietary waterproof membrane is a proven performer
  • Dirt cheap, high quality

Cons:

  • Not as safe as your average motorcycle boot
  • Waterproof membrane reduces breathability

6. Alpinestars Tech 7 Enduro Drystar Boots

The Tech 7 Enduro Drystar is hands-down the best option out there for dirt-focused dual sport, adventure, and enduro riders if waterproof motorcycle boots are what you're after. We love the Tech 7 because it's a motocross boot that happens to have some touring chops rather than the other way around.

That means you're getting uncompromising protection from abrasion, impacts, hyperextension injuries, you name it. This is a proper TPU-heavy tank of a boot complete with the same dual hinge system used by the pros.

side-view-of-rider-with-tech-7-enduro-moto-boots

"The Tech 7 is a favorite among our guides for its great protection and above-average comfort."

And while the Tech 7 Enduro Drystar is among the safest motocross boots money can buy (it's still slightly outclassed safety-wise by boots like the flagship Tech 10 or Sidi Crossfire), it makes our list because it also happens to be the most comfortable motocross boot we've ever worn.

The Tech 7 is truly all-day comfortable and fairly easy to walk in off the bike thanks to it's slightly more flexible toe box and lugged enduro-style sole.

New call-to-action

As far as downsides, our main complaint with the Tech 7 Enduro Drystar is that it's the most expensive version of the Tech 7 (there's also a standard motocross version and an enduro version without the waterproof membrane), and will set you back about $100 more than the original.

We'll also point out that while it's comfort and walkability are impressive, this is still a motocross boot at heart, which means it's a bit clunky and still squeaks like the doors in a haunted house.

Pros:

  • Uncompromising motocross protection
  • The most comfortable MX boot we've tried
  • Waterproof membrane adds touring chops

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Heavy and noisy compared to an adventure boot

7. Daytona Road Star GTX Boots

Often imitated, never duplicated, the Daytona Road Star GTX is arguably the most sought-after road touring boot of all time. Don't get us wrong, there are some utterly premium touring boots out there nowadays, but nothing quite matches the quality or comfort of the Road Star.

Where to begin with a boot this good? Material-wise Daytona cuts no corners here, building the Road Star from a combination of hydrophobic full-grain cowhide and supple kangaroo leather on the outside, then backing it with Kevlar panels for added abrasion resistance and heat dissipation.

long-straight-road-on-the-pacific-coast-highway

"If your views look anything like these, the Daytona Road Star is the boot you want."

Inside the Road Star is luxuriously comfortable and well-padded, with every touch surface made from either suede or a soft moisture-wicking three-layer GoreTex fabric. You'd never guess there were hard TPU enforcements hidden inside this waterproof motorcycle boot, but Daytona manages to work them into the toes, ankles, and shins of the Road Star.

Motorcycle Trip Kit

This boot is expensive, no doubt about it, but it fits like a glove for any foot/calf combo and will last for years and years of four-season touring.  This is a big investment, but if you're a hardcore rain-or-shine road warrior, nothing else quite compares to the Daytona Road Star GTX.

Pros:

  • Outrageous comfort
  • Benchmark for quality and durability
  • Outstanding impact and abrasion protection

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Not ideal for all-terrain touring

Closing Thoughts on Waterproof Motorcycle Boots…

While we've only scratched the tip of the iceberg on what's out there for waterproof motorcycle boots nowadays, each of the boots above are something we'd happily recommend to friends or family.

They're safe, built to last, and in our experience, they can all be counted on to keep you dry when the weather doesn't want to cooperate.

testing-the-waterproofing-of-the-klim-adventure-gtx-bootWe'd also like to point out there are far more pairs of non-GoreTex boots represented here than GoreTex ones.

Again, GoreTex has never let us down and we remain fans of GTX products, but this just goes to show how far proprietary waterproofing technology has come in the last several years.
