We've written about it before in previous blog posts, and the question constantly comes up from inquiring customers: "Should I ship my motorcycle internationally, or just rent one there?"
In a recent LinkedIn discussion about motorcycle riding experiences, Vincent Kerr from the U.K. comments:
"Renting a bike? Would definitely do it again. Last year I had my bike shipped to Ushuaia, Argentina on a [anonymous company] trip. The bikes arrived 7 days later than scheduled which screwed up our schedule a tad!"
The interesting thing here is that this happened to Vince's group on an organized group tour by what appeared to be a reputable touring company! If such motorcycle shipping arrangements can fail within experienced tour coordinators, imagine what could happen if you're trying to ship your bike for the first time, or to a country you've never shipped to before.
International shipping papers & documentation, temporary vehicle circulation permits, necessary insurance requirements, "spontaneous" customs fees from less-than-reputable port and border officials, freight company delays & issues.......the list of possible errors and obstacles goes on and on, and many riders in addition to Vincent have regretted shipping instead of just renting locally.
Not to mention, why put your own motorcycle through the wear & tear of the terrain you're seeking when you can put those miles on someone else's bike? Use a locally licensed and registered motorcycle with local support for parts and service and keep countless possible hassles and delays from tarnishing your international riding adventure!!!
