A sure stop in any Bolivia tour is the Salar de Uyuni (Salt Flats of Uyuni.) Known as the largest in the world and famous for motorcycle riders, it stretches over 4,086 square miles, is dead flat, wide open, and a speed-lover’s dream come true. Part of this stage will definitely be staying in one of the excellent “salt hotels” in the area, given that moniker because they are exactly that: Hotels made entirely from salt blocks hand-carved from the salt flat itself.
Bolivia’s financial capital and largest city, La Paz is typically part of tours as well. Not only is it amazing to sink into that aspect of Bolivian culture, but it also serves as a departure point for those brave enough to ride “The Road of Death!” This famous stretch of road earned its name because of the unfortunate number of travelers that have fallen what can be up to 2000 feet off the edge to their demise. Don’t get too worked up about this part of the ride though. With a proper pre-ride briefing, cautious spirit, and plenty of intestinal fortitude, any rider that makes it to this point in a tour should have no problem adding this exhilarating experience to their list of adventures.
